Thomas understood immediately. His own expression fell blank. "The caverns..." He said. It wasn't a question but Peg gave him an answering nod.

"I'd hoped to spend the day with you," he said, his accent thick. The times when the children were gone were the only days he felt he could see her. "Otherwise, I'm neglecting my duty," he'd told her the first time, and she admired him for it even as she tried to stamp out the jealousy she felt at not being able to have his affections all the time.

"You can spend a moment with me," she whispered, and he took the cue. His strong arms unfolded her, the coarse cloth of his work shirt pressing the softer fabric of her uniform against her. He leaned in and their lips met, and Peg wished that time could stop for them right there, that they could live in this kiss for a lifetime. She understood the lure of the caverns for the Emeritus, as she clung to Thomas' shoulders. Who wouldn't want the prize they hid?
